[CA] National Committee for 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi



President, Mr. Ram Nath Kovind presided over the first meeting of the national committee set up for commemoration of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, in 2019
·         150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi will be commemorated from Oct 02, 2018-19 to Oct 02, 2020; Rs. 150 crore have been allocated for this purpose under the Union Budget 2018
·         Prime Minister stressed that all programmes associated with this celebration should be designed around the theme of “Karyanjali” or “Gandhi in Action
·         External Affairs Minister, Ms. Sushma Swaraj said that the Ministry was planning to hold celebrations in 193 countries across the world and there will be one common programme at different venues
·         Chief Minister of Odisha, Mr. Naveen Patnaik suggested that the word “ahimsa” (non-violence) must be added to the Preamble to the Indian Constitution as the “Greatest tribute” to Mahatma Gandhi
·         Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Ms. Mehbooba Mufti proposed that the 150th year of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth should be celebrated as the year of peace and reconciliation
·         The committee has a total of 125 members (116 from India and 9 from other countries) [Click here for the list of International Observers in the Committee]
