AWARDS

Ramon Magsaysay Awards 2015
·        Asia’s Nobel Prize
·        Given by the Philippines Government
·        2015 award given to 5 persons, of which 2 are Indians
v Mr. Sanjiv Chaturvedi (investigating corruption in public office)
v Mr. Anshu Gupta (community development; founded “Goonj”, a NGO)
·        Award was established in 1957


Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize 2015
·        Winner: Historian Ramchandra Guha
·        The Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize, established in 1990 by the Japanese city of Fukuoaka, recognises outstanding achievements by individuals or groups in preserving and creating the unique and diverse cultures of Asia. The Fukuoka Prize is offered in three categories viz. Grand prize, Academic prize and Arts and Culture prize.
·        Guha, is best known for his book India After Gandhi

 UN’s Mandela Prize
·        Winners: Helena Ndume (Namibia) and Jorge Sampaio (Portugal)
·        First ever Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize by the United Nations (UN)
·        Nelson Mandela International Day is on July 18
·        The prize was established in June 2014 by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) to pay homage to Nelson Mandela
·        Helena Ndume: a female ophthalmologist, was awarded for treating blindness and eye – related illness in Namibia and throughout the developing world
·        Jorge Sampaio: Former President of Portugal and former Mayor of Lisbon; was awarded for his contribution to his country for his struggle for rhe restoration of democracy in Portugal

Copley Medal
·        World’s oldest scientific prize
·        Winner: Peter Higgs (already he won Nobel Prize)
·        Awarded for his pioneering work on the theory of the Higgs Boson, which was discovered in 2012
·        Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein was previously the winners of Copley Medal

World Food Prize 2015
·        Winner: Sir Fazle Hasan Abed (Bangladesh)
·        Sir Abed has been recognized for his decades of service to human development and through building Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) that operates in 10 countries around the world.
·        BRAC, set up by Sir Abed is the largest non-governmental organization in the world that employs over 150000 employees and covered a vast gamut of activities related to poverty alleviation and development.
·        2014 winner: Indian – born Mexican scientist Sanjaya Rajaram (for wheat production)

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2015
·        Winner: Sania Mirza (Tennis)
·        It is highest award given by the Government of India in the field of Sports
·        Sania Mirza becomes the second Tennis player to receive this award and also ninth female to win this
·        In 2015, Sania Mirza won Women Doubles title in Wimbledon and US Open
·        Totally 5 Grandslam so far
·        She was appointed as the UN Women's Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia during the event held to mark the International Day To End Violence Against Women
·        She is the brand ambassador of the Indian state of Telangana

Saraswati Sammaan Award 2014
·        Winner: Mr. Veerappa Moily
·        24th Saraswati Sammaan Award
·        For his epic Ramayana Mahanveshanam written in Kannada
·        The poem was translated into English, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil
·        2013 winner: Mr. Govind Mishra (Hindi Poet)

Vyaas Sammaan Award 2014
·        Winner: Dr. Kamal Kishore Goenka (eminent Hindi writer)
·        24th Vyass Sammaan Award; award is presented to an outstanding literary work in Hindi
·        For his work 'Premchand ki Kahaniyon ka Kaal Kramanusaar Adhyayan'
·        2013 winner: Mr. Vishwanath Tripathi

Sunhak Peace Prize 2014
·        Winners: Dr. M. Vijay Gupta (India) and Mr. Anote Tong (President, Kiribati) à first recipients of Sunhak Peace Prize
·        Dr. Vijay Gupta – Fisheries scientist; considered as a pioneer in the blue revolution of Southeast Asia
·        This award is given to eminent individuals from around the world for their contribution to peace and development of the world. The winners, will share the $1 million international peace prize

2015 SASTRA Ramanujan Award
·        Winner: Dr. Jacob Tsimerman
·        University of Toronto, Canada
·        He primarily conducts research in Number Theory.
·        He will be conferred with the prize during the International Conference on Number Theory at SASTRA University in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu where the prize is given annually.
·        The age limit for the prize is 32 years as Ramanujan died at 32. The current prize money for the award is 10000 US Dollars

 USIBC Global Leadership Award 2015
·        Winners: (1) Ms. Indra Nooyi (PepsiCO Chairman) and Ms. Shobhana Bharatia (Hindustan Times Group Chairman)
·        They were honoured for their roles as top women leaders in the Business  world and their commitment to drive a more inclusive global economy
·        Apart from them, renowned Indian-American artist (Painting) Natvar Bhavsar was awarded with the Artistic Achievement Award
·        USIBC is the largest bilateral trade association in the United States with liaison presence in New York, Silicon Valley and New Delhi

CPJ’s first cartoonist awardee, who is charged with sedition and faces a potential 43-year jail term for drawings lampooning high-level abuse in the Malaysian government.
Candido Figueredo Ruiz – Paraguay
Journalist who faces death threats and has lived under 24-hour police protection for the past two decades because of his reporting on drug smuggling on the Brazil-Paraguay border.
Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently – Syria
A Syrian citizen journalist collective and one of the few independent news sources that continues to report from inside the Islamic State’s self-proclaimed capital.
Zone 9 bloggers – Ethiopia
Group of bloggers of which six were arrested, imprisoned, and charged with terrorism in retaliation for critical reporting
