Perambalur Dt. Collector bags award
·        Perambalur Collector Darez Ahmed has received the ‘Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in public administration.’
·        Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave away the award, which carries a purse of Rs. 1 lakh, in appreciation of his service in protecting girl children.
·        The award was given at a function held in New Delhi to mark the observance of the Civil Services Day.
·        The district had poor sex ratio till a few years ago. Foeticide and female infanticide had been the main reason for the poor child sex ratio.
·        Mr. Darez Ahmed had evolved various programmes to check foeticide and female infanticide. . Focus on ante-natal care included a special surveillance to check foeticide.



TN bags e-Panchyat award
·        Tamil Nadu has bagged the e-Panchayat Puraskar award for 2014 for developing a set of applications for better administration of panchayati raj institutions.
·        The State has won the award, which carries a cash prize of Rs. 20 lakh, for developing applications like PRIASoft, Local Government Directory, National Panchayat Portal, National Asset Directory and Plan Plus.
·        It had spent about Rs. 80 crore on hardware at panchayats towards implementation of the applications as well.
·        Rural Development and Panchayat Raj secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi received the award from Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a function in New Delhi.



TN cancels land for Coca-Cola
·        Tamil Nadu Government cancelled allotment of land for Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Private Limited (HCCBPL) in the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (SIPCOT) Industrial Growth Centre in Perundurai.
·        SIPCOT Managing Director R. Selvaraj issued the cancellation order of 71.34 acres allotted to HCCBPL for non-compliance of terms and conditions of allotment order / lease deed.
·        SIPCOT allotted 71.34 acres at the Industrial Growth Centre in Perundurai on 21 June 2013.
·        A lease deed was executed and registered by HCCB on 23 January 2014.  The lease deed was executed for 17.9 crore rupees for a period of 99 years.
  
Engineer suicides; Minister held
·        Former Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister Agri S S Krishnamoorthy and a chief engineer in the Agriculture Department were arrested in connection with the suicide of a senior officer.
·        Executive engineer S Muthukumarasamy, employed with the department, had killed himself in Tirunelveli on February 20, allegedly owing to pressure on him to demand bribes to fill up seven posts of drivers in the department.
·        After the suicide snowballed into a major controversy, Krishnamoorthy had resigned (sacked) as Agriculture Minister.

Jayalalithaa was sworn in as the CM of Tamil Nadu
·        Jayalalithaa was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu (May 23, 2015)
·        She won the R.K. Nagar assembly constituency by-poll
·        Chief Electoral Officer Sandeep Saxena launched E-Netra System in RK Nagar Assembly constituency, to track election related expenditure and to ensure ‘quality disposal’ of by-poll related complaints within two to 24 hours.



Amma Marundhagam hits 100
·        The number of Amma Marundhagams (Pharmacies) has crossed 100 with Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurating 16 more through video-conferencing at the Secretariat. Such pharmacies are opened at Dindigul, Karur, Pudukottai, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupur, Sivaganga and Tuticorin districts as well for an estimated total cost of Rs 1.60 crore.

MCI sanctions 100 seats for new medical college in Chennai
·        The Medical Council of India has recommended to the Central government that the new medical college coming up on the Omandurar Estate be permitted to add 100 seats this academic year.
·        With this, the number of seats available in government medical colleges under single window counselling is expected to go up to 2,655.
·        Of these, 85 seats will be allotted to students in the State and 15 seats will be reserved for All India Quota.
·        With this, the number of government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu increased to 20.

No outages in this summer as TNEB bridges gap
·        This summer was the first in seven years in Tamil Nadu without any power outages.
·        Chennai and other cities in Tamil Nadu too spared of power cuts with TNEB planning uninterrupted supply, thanks to an increase in generation over the last two years, which helped keep the shortage under 1,000MW for the first time in several years.
·        This is a big improvement from the situation in 2008 when the shortage was around 4,000MW.



Chennai Metrowater bags international award
·        Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has bagged ‘The Water Leaders Award-2015’ for managing the drought situation in the city efficiently last year.
·        The award was presented by Global Water Leaders group, a non-profit organisation, which brings together top executives of water agencies to address the world’s water challenges.
·        It was presented by Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission and Prime Minister of Portugal at a function in Greece.

Project clearance in 30 days
·        After the acquittal of AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case, the often postponed Global Investors Meet (GIM) is being revived again.
·        The State Industries Department has promised to provide all statutory and administrative clearances within 30 days to the companies signing MoUs during the GIM 2015 scheduled for September 9 and 10 (as of now).
·        It also promised appointment of Escort Officer for each of the companies with whom MoUs would be signed to facilitate single window clearance.

World Bank to help Tamil Nadu
·        The Union Government signed Loan and Project Agreements with the World Bank for assistance of 400 million US dollars for Tamil Nadu Sustainable Urban Development Project (TNSUDP).
·        The objective of the project is to improve urban services in participating Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in a financially sustainable manner and to pilot improved urban management practices in selected cities.
·        The total project size is 600 million US dollars.
·        Three main components of the Project:-
Ø  Investment in Urban Services: The project will support improvement in range of urban services including water, sewerage, municipal solid waste, urban transportation, sewerage management and storm water drainage. The project includes creation of a reserve fund to provide credit enhancements for municipal bonds and other market based Loan instruments issued by ULBs.
Ø  Result Based Grants for Urban Governance: The project will provide results-based grants to eligible ULBs to implement new urban-management models that strengthen governance and financial sustainability.
Ø  Urban Sector Technical Assistance: The project will support strengthening the capacity of ULBs and urban sector officials.

Migrant Resource Centre in Chennai
·        The Union Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) along with the Tamil Nadu Government launched the Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) in Chennai.
·        The MRC in Chennai is the fourth such MRC in India set-up by MOIA.
·        The first Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) was established by MOIA in 2008 in Kochi, Kerala, followed by fully functional MRCs in Hyderabad (Telangana & Andhra Pradesh), Gurgaon (Haryana) and Chennai (Tamil Nadu).
·        The MRC will provide information, guidance, advise and counselling on all aspects of overseas employment including legal and regulatory requirements; documentation and procedures; policies; and problems faced while working aboard to intending migrants and overseas Indian workers.

 Madras HC made wearing of helmets for two-wheelers compulsory
·        The Madras High Court (HC) directed the Tamil Nadu Government to make wearing of helmets for two-wheelers compulsory from 1 July 2015 onwards.
·        This direction was given with concern over the increasing number of people losing their lives in road accidents.
·        The order was passed by Justice N Kirubakaran who directed the State Home Secretary to make the public aware of the happening through media under Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

For differently abled kids, treatment comes to their door step
·        Medical treatment will henceforth reach severely diffabled kids at their door steps.
·        Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa flagged off 31 mobile units (vans) for treating diffabled children at their residences.
·        This is a first of its kind initiative in the country and the vans have been bought at a cost of Rs. 4.49 crore.


Memorial for Sankralinganar and Veerapandiya Kattaboman
·        Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa inaugurated a memorial constructed at Virudhunagar to honour Sankaralinganar, who died in 1956 on an indefinite hunger strike to rename the erstwhile Madras State as Tamil Nadu.
·        The memorial has been built at a cost of Rs 77 lakh.
·        The Chief Minister also inaugurated a memorial for the first freedom fighter to oppose British Raj, VeeraPandiya Kattabomman.
·        The memorial has been built at Kayathar in Thoothukudi district, where he was hanged by the British. The memorial has been built at a cost of Rs 1.20 crore.

TN, Adani Group to sign an agreement on 200-MW solar plant
·        The Adani Group to sign a power purchase agreement with the Tamil Nadu government to set up a 200-MW solar power plant in Ramanathapuram at an investment of nearly Rs.1,400 crore.
·        The group is also in discussion with the State government to set up a 1,000-MW solar plant in the State.

Chennai Metro Train
·        The first phase of Chennai Metro Rail service was on 29 June 2015 launched by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
·        The first phase of Metro service covers the 10-km elevated stretch. It connects Alandur in south Chennai to Koyabedu in the north.
·        The whole project is implemented by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). The project was approved by then Congress-led UPA government in 2009.
·        With launching of this Metro service, Chennai became seventh city in India to have metro service including Delhi, Mumbai, Gurgaon, Bangalore, Kolkata and Jaipur.
