President,
Mr. Pranab Mukherjee presented Nari Shakti Puraskars for the year 2015 at a
function organized on the International Women’s Day in Rashtrapati Bhawan, New
Delhi.

The International
Women’s Day is observed this year with the theme “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality”.

Every year March
8 is observed as International Women’s Day to celebrate womanhood. On this day,
Presdient of India will confer Sree Shakti and Nari Shakti Puraskars Awards usually,
but from this year onwards only Nari Shakti Puraskars will be given; awards
given under the Sree Shakti Puraskar Award has been merged with Nari Shakti
Puraskar; the award has been initiated by the Government in recognition to
singular contribution of women.

The Women and
Child Development Minister Ms. Maneka Gandhi proposed 33% reservation for women
in police. In another move she proposed appointment of women as Special Police
Officers who will work as honorary police women and provide interface between
the police force and the women affected by violence.

In her
introductory speech, the Minister for Women & Child Development, Ms. Maneka
Gandhi said that the Nari Shakti Award
is the highest and most prestigious Indian National award conferred by the
President of India upon exceptional women in recognition of their
achievement in promoting positive change and being examples among women. The
women recognized by this award have a history of overcoming seemingly
insurmountable obstacles through courage and foresight to bring about positive
change they wish to see in the world.
