FIFA Suspends Nigeria:
·        FIFA suspended Nigeria from all international football competitions with immediate effect. Nigeria was suspended on account of government interference in running Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
·        Nigeria reached the second round of the World Cup 2014 in Brazil and this is the third time to reach second round of World Cup in their history (earlier in 1994 and 1998).
India’s connection with FIFA 2014:
v     Prime Minister Narendra Modi released commemorative postage stamps on the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
v     The Prime Minister also urged the Department of Posts to develop a website on the history of Indian football in lieu of India hosting the U-17 FIFA World Cup in 2017.
India in FIFA World Cup:
v     India by default qualified for the 1950 FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil due to withdrawal of all of their scheduled opponents. But they were not able to participate due to FIFA ruling after 1948 London Olympics Games that didn’t allow barefoot participation in the World Cup. However, there were also domestic reasons. India is ranked at 154th position in World Ranking.
