SANGAM AGE IN TAMIL NADU
As The academy of the Tamil poets (sangam)
was established and patronized by the Pandyan Kings. The date of the sangam is
one of the greatest puzzles in Tamil chronology.

Duties of Sangam
Rulers:-
5-fold duties: As per the book
Tholkappiyam (தொல்காப்பியம்), the five fold
duties of the Samgam rulers are,
I. Learning
II. Performing Sacrifices
III. Making presents
IV. Protecting Subjects
V. Punishing the wicked and guilty
8-fold duties: As per
Nachinarkiniyar (நாச்சினார்கினியார்),
the eight fold duties of the Sangam rulers are,
I. Good Birth
II. Good Education
III. Good Conduct
IV. Truthfulness
V. Purity of thought and action
VI. Impartiality
VII. Absence of Envy and Jealousy
VIII. Lack of personal motive
The Sangam rulers adopted
the policy of decentralization by giving importance to the
local administration bodies in towns and villages.

The important industries flourished in Sangam rule
was,

Trade:-
Internal Trade:
Ø Based on barter system
Ø Salt merchants called as
“umanar” (உமன்ர்)
Ø Day bazaar called as
“Nallangadi”
Ø Paddy was the medium of
exchange
External Trade:
Ø Foods: Pepper, Ginger, Rice
Ø Spices: Cardamom, Cinnamon,
Turmeric
Ø Trees: Sandalwood, Ahil
Ø Ornaments: Ivory, Pearl
Trades with the Hebrews, Arabia, Egypt, Burma,
Sumatra, China {The Hebrew Bible mentions two important objects namely Kapim (monkey)
and Tukim (peacock) imported by them from Tamil Nadu}
